What is ENS?

Modified on Fri, 17 Feb, 2023 at 12:45 AM

ENS, or Ethereum Name Service, is a protocol built on the Ethereum network that aims to transform obfuscated addresses into human-readable and easy-to-understand domain names, for example changing 0x32be3...02d91 to alice.eth.

On the other hand, the ENS token is an ERC-20 standard token that functions as a Governance token. To further elaborate, it is a token that allows holders to participate in the management of the DAO-style ENS protocol, which helps the further development of the ENS itself.

Making the display names on blockchain easy to understand for individuals, instead of an obfuscated code, is considered as another step towards mass adoption or widespread adoption of blockchain technology. For example, if you want to transfer money to a friend, instead of entering a full address like 0x32be3...02d9, you can simply transfer it to alice.eth.
