Moonriver: Moonbeam’s Sibling Network

Modified on Thu, 7 Dec, 2023 at 2:50 PM

Fans of Polkadot and Kusama are likely familiar with the strengths of both networks. One of these strengths is Parachains, which are like sub-blockchain networks that work alongside the main network, providing security levels equivalent to the main network.

While the most prominent Parachain on Polkadot, Moonbeam (GLMR), has gained significant attention, how does its sibling network on Kusama, Moonriver (MOVR), compare? In this article, we will summarize the story of Moonriver for you.

What is Moonriver (MOVR)?

Moonriver is a Substrate-based Parachain (sub-blockchain network) that operates on the Kusama network. It is a network that can work in conjunction with Ethereum and supports smart contracts. This means that developers can create blockchain applications using the same programming language as Ethereum immediately on Moonriver.

Moonriver was developed to work alongside Moonbeam, which is a Parachain on Polkadot. Moonriver serves as a testing ground for code, functions, and features before deploying them on the Moonbeam network, emphasizing security and stability. Testing on Moonriver provides a real-world economic environment for testing. If testing goes well, the same code can be deployed on Moonbeam.

The main goal of both Moonriver and Moonbeam is to provide a platform for smart contracts that can smoothly run Ethereum dApps on the Substrate-based environment without the need for extensive code rewriting. Substrate is the underlying blockchain framework used by Kusama and Polkadot.

The Creators of Moonriver

Moonriver shares the same creators as Moonbeam, which is PureStake, with Derek Yoo as the CEO. PureStake is a platform dedicated to developing foundational infrastructure for public blockchains, offering both security and trustworthiness for application developers and blockchain projects.

Derek Yoo previously worked at Thinking Phone Networks, where he was responsible for strategic vision, development, and operations. Additionally, he served as a Product Manager for BladeLogic, a leading enterprise-level Data Center services company.

Stefan Mehlhorn, an expert in company management and recently co-founded PureStake, also holds the position of Chief Operations Officer (COO) for both Moonbeam and PureStake. Stefan has worked with companies such as Samsung Pay, Candibell Inc., LoopPay, Permessa, and Thinking Phone Network.

Summary

Moonriver is like a sibling to Moonbeam, but it operates on the Kusama network while Moonbeam operates on Polkadot. It has MOVR as the primary cryptocurrency token of the network.

Moonriver was created to provide an alternative for developers or applications on the Ethereum network to migrate their projects to Moonriver, which offers high speed and lower fees. Moonriver serves as a testing ground for project functionality in a real economic environment, and once testing is satisfactory, projects can be deployed on Moonbeam, which prioritizes security and stability.
