Polkadot was co-founded by Gavin Wood (Dr. Gavin James Wood) who also co-founded and was a former CTO of the Ethereum network.
Nowadays, there are thousands of blockchains created with different purposes, but they are not truly connected. That is where Polkadot aims to solve it by connecting these blockchains together using Relay Chain technology. They can see that in the future, there will not be solely dominating blockchain, instead, these blockchains will co-exist and be connected like the internet of blockchains.
