Stellar Lumens work by utilizing “Public Ledger” on the blockchain. The differences of Stellar from other currencies are: Stellar uses an “anchor” as the middleman who bridges between currencies and XLM (bank, for example). A trusted anchor will hold the sender's money and issue the sender a “credit”. After sending through the network, the receiver can withdraw from the anchor on their end.
Stellar uses Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) and implements Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA). It can handle more than 1,000 transactions at the same time, and each transaction takes less than 5 seconds to process with a very low transaction fee (lower than $0.01) for anti-spam purposes.
