Axelar is a platform developed by the founders of Algorand as a tool for DApp (Decentralized Application) developers to support their applications in connecting with other blockchains for cross-chain operation via GMP (General Message Passing) technology that can enable the communication between chains on a smart contract level.

The Axelar platform is a decentralized network using Proof-of-Stake as its consensus protocol with Node Validators who check the legitimization of transactions and any activities occurring on the platform, while AXL is the main token of the network.

Axelar founders

Axelar has two key co-founders, Sergey Gorbunov and Georgios Vlachos, who both played a key role in the development of the Algorand network.

Sergey Gorbunov is a professor’s assistant at the University of Waterloo and a head of cryptography at Algorand. He received his Ph.D. from MIT and was also awarded the Sprowls Doctoral Thesis Prize, which is an award for the best doctoral thesis from MIT, on his thesis topic of designing cryptographic tools for the cloud using lattice-based cryptography.

Whereas, Georgios Vlachos is one of the co-founders of Algorand, serving as the company’s head of mathematics. He designed and developed the consensus algorithm for Axelar. In addition, he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science from MIT and has been awarded a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2011.
