What if someone creates a better digital currency?

There is no guarantee that bitcoin will retain its position forever. Currently, there are thousands of different digital currencies, each offering different benefits and uses that are competing in the cryptocurrency market. However, Bitcoin’s advantage of being the first and most mainstream cryptocurrency means that it’ll require a highly innovative coin to surpass it.  Bitcoin remains the most popular coin in the world and boasts the most users; it can also be argued that as long as the underlying transactional cryptocurrency protocols are sustained, Bitcoin will retain its spot as the number one currency.
